Worship
Our purpose as a community of faith is to bring glory and praise to God, as we show our love for God in the presence of one another. Our basic pattern of worship is this: Gathering, Hearing and Proclaiming God’s Word, Giving Thanks, and Sending Forth. We gather together in song, words of welcome and prayers of praise. We Hear and Proclaim God’s word through the Children’s Moments, scripture reading, and the sermon (usually 15-18 minutes). We Give Thanks through Holy Communion, and/or a time of prayer and offering. We are Sent Forth (benediction/blessing) as a body of people formed by our worship of God, into a world that longs to know of God’s love.
We worship in a blended worship style. Our music is made up of any combination of hymns, choral anthems, praise band music, and hand bells. We find that we embody the unity of Jesus Christ by not segregating ourselves based on musical preference, but by worshipping through a variety of musical expressions.
Holy Communion
Holy Communion is the celebration of God’s presence with us as we remember and participate in the story of God’s salvation, from Creation through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The pastor and the people pray a prayer called The Great Thanksgiving, as the pastor invokes the present work of the Holy Spirit to bless the elements, making them be for us the body and blood of Christ, so that we may be for the world the body of Christ redeemed by His blood. We believe that God is present in the elements, helping us to become a community that witnesses to the reconciliation offered by Jesus Christ to a world that is broken.
At Holy Covenant United Methodist Church, Communion is served by intinction—the act of dipping the bread into the cup of juice. As United Methodists, the community of Holy Covenant practices an open communion table, which means that all people are welcome. After a pastor consecrates the elements (bread and juice), the congregation prays the Lord’s Prayer, then the ushers guide the people to where they can receive them. Communion is celebrated in worship on the first Sunday of every month, and the other Sundays in the chapel, immediately following the 8:30am worship service.
